Our research

The Institute of Robotics and Vision (IoRV) was founded in March 2015 at Auckland University of Technology (AUT).

IoRV is devoted to research in computer vision and robotics. In addition to inheriting the activities from the Environment Perception and Driver Assistance (.enpeda.) group, the institute has initiated new research in stereo vision, intelligent surveillance, deep learning, AR and VR, soft robots, digital image and video technology, and multimedia.

We engage in new technologies for the changing world, and our research contributes to the progress and maintenance of indigenous culture, arts and media, especially related to Māori and Pacific people.

Our research themes

Robotics systems

We apply our soft robotics and control theory research to real-life applications in remote sensing imagery and autonomous vehicles.

Computer vision

We continue strengthening our research capabilities in stereo vision and medical imaging as well as digital geometry.

Natural language processing

We use deep learning methods for speech recognition, closed captioning and subtitling.

Fruit measurement and classifications

We apply deep learning and computer vision to support the New Zealand fruit sector.

Intelligent systems

Our systems cover robotics, computer vision, natural language processing, and VR/AR metaverse systems.
